Self Portraits – Linework & Detail
CONTINUOUS LINE | TONAL PORTRAIT | FACE FEATURES
In this series we will explore a range of drawing techniques and experiment with the depiction of ourselves. You’ll need either a mirror or a selfie to work from. We will look at the basic proportions of the face and develop your observational skills to create a series of self-portraits. These sessions will explore a range of exercises and techniques suitable for all levels with participants supported in a friendly and supportive online environment.
Monday 21st February – 6:30pm – 7:30pm UK Time
Continuous Line – Grip & Line Weight
In this session you’ll explore a fun and relaxed approach to self-portraiture. Your teacher will guide you step-by-step in how to create a continuous line drawing, as well as experimenting with blind drawing to really hone your observational skills.
Monday 28th February – 6:30pm – 7:30pm UK Time
Tonal Portrait – Shadows & Reduction
This week you’ll learn about mark making techniques and the creation of tone. You’ll draw along with your teacher and observe where light and shadow meet. You will be introduced to the concept of the reduction method, using your eraser to create the highlights you observe in your facial features.
Monday 7th March – 6:30pm – 7:30pm UK Time
Facial Features – Eye, Lips & Hair
This class is a step-by-step guide to drawing your facial features in detail. You’ll
learn how to portray realistic looking eyes, lips and hair. You’ll be introduced to previously
explored techniques and encouraged to build up depth in your drawing.
You will need:
- Mirror or phone selfie (or photograph) of yourself to work from
- Paper
- Pencil (varying grades if you have them. Eg. HB and 4B. Though not essential)
- Biro
- Eraser
- Blue tack, masking tape or Post-Its
- Kitchen towel or tissue
